I finally got the countershaft nut off my transmission a couple of evenings ago. I picked up a 1/4" x 1" x 3' piece of steel and drilled 7/16" holes to match the drive shaft coupling. Bolted it on and let one end rest on the floor to prevent the drive shaft from turning. Then I put a piece of 1/2" x 1/2" x 1' stock in the countershaft nut's keyway, slipped a length of 3/4" black pipe over that, and finally had the leverage to remove it. Bent the 1/2" square stock in the process, though! Thanks to those who offered suggestions - since the ultimate solution was a little different, so I wanted to contribute it for those who might benefit.
