I have had reasonable luck with JB Weld. I just did this recently on the mower shaft on my Woods mower for my cub. I used a file and roughed up the groove a bit so the epoxy would stick good. Then Applied a HEAVY layer of epoxy to ensure a good solid bead of epoxy in the groove with no air bubbles, etc. I allowed it to dry good and hard. Then I used a flat file to shve the epoxy away. when I was done I only had epoxy in the groove and all the surrounding metal was bare agian. Becareful not to mar up the metal, this will eat up the seal in a hurry. I then used the finest file I had to smooth it out. Then finished off with the smoothest sand paper I could get. I reinstalled witha good heavy coat of grease on both the seal and the shaft. All seems well so far, but time will tell if it lasts. take it for what it is worth......p
