It really doesn't matter. So many parts on the A & B are interchangable you could make either one into the other without much trouble. You could have a B seat bracket on an A. Or someone could have put an A front end on a B and mounted the left side final drive against the transmission to make it into an A. Look at the right side axle, foot plate and fender. If it was a B the right side axle is 4" longer than an A. An easy way to tell is to look at the fender and right side of the seat bracket. If the fender is mounted to the same place as the seat bracket, using the same bolts, it probably was an A. If the seat bracket is mounted to the top of the axle housing, about 4" from the fender, it probably started out as a B. Look at the grill, the bottom of an A grill is different from a B because the front of the cultivators mount differently on an A & B. does the grill look like it was altered? What year does the serial number on the seat indicate? Early models ('39,'40','41)of both were likely to match the motor serial number, later ones usually didn't.
