Oil bath air cleaner-IH 444 Diesel

2 questions: 1.Can I use steel wool as mesh in my air cleaner. Part not available anymore from dealer. Seems to me steel wool would disintegrate and get sucked
into the engine. Wrong way to go if that happens. 2. I thought I saw somewhere on this Board that blocked or dirty air cleaner could cause blow by and/or black exhaust. I've got a real good case of blow-by all the time and blue -black exhaust on start-up. Any help would be appreciated. kajun
