1954 cub in trouble

i want to buy this cub w/9 imp. the problem is ,owner said front pto&1st gear long shaft that goes length of tractor to pto box is out. he said was mowing and had a very bad pull on motor it was killed. restarted and drove to barn,does this sound right? how much trouble and expence is this.man wants $2800 w/9 imp is this a deal? what do you think? thanks nfp
