Removing the short pipe on the A Exhaust Manifold

I have a 1947 Super A that I am replacing the Muffler on. The short 6 inch water pipe that mounts between the muffler and the manifold is getting thin and I would like to replace it. What experiences have each of you had in replacing this? I have though about putting a chisel on the side of this, with the blade vertical and trying to cave in one side to loosen the pipe in the threads. I am afraid to put a pipe wrench on the pipe thinking I will just twist off the pipe or break something.
