Jim, you said it ran decent but leaked oil. If it wasn't smoking like the dickens when you bought it there's no mechanical reason for it to start from sitting. I started my H after sitting for almost 2 years and it smoked, then after it ran a while it was fine. I suspect oil leaking down around the valve seals and guides caused the smoke, and after some running it was okay..How long did you let it run? The other guys who responded are correct in suggesting a heavier oil. The heavier oil won't leak down as readily. Who knows if you have a compression test on the cylinders you might just need valve guides and seals to fix the problem permanently..on the other hand an oil change could end some of the smoking.
