The first check is as Vern said, make sure the steering arm is bolted tight to the steering shaft at the bottom of the box. Make sure the play is not due to the tie rods. This box has two shafts, each supported by bearings. The steering column has a large ball bearing on the bottom end. It can be replaced by removing the steering wheel and the big plug in the front of the box and unscrewing the shaft out through the front. The other shaft is short and almost vertical and connects to the steering arm. It's bearings are harder to replace because I believe the box has to come out. Have a helper turn the wheel while you see what moves and let us know what you find out.
