Gene - I tend to agree with the others - you've got a valve train problem. However before you start opening the motor up, suggest you stick a timing light on the motor and watch the timing. Do it both with a cold engine and again after it warms up. What you are looking is not the actual timing number, but whether or not the timing is stable. If the timing mark appears to be jumping around randomly (+ or - more than a few degrees) it indicates a wear problem in the distributor, and will cause exactly the symptoms you describe. We had a similar problem on an IHC truck (304 V8). Turned out badly worn distributor shaft/bushings was causing 30-40 deg timing variation - the timing marked was jumping all over the place. Replacing the shaft and bushings cured the problem. Note: Distributor wear will also show up on a dwell meter. A good distributor will show a steady dwell reading. But the dwell meter needle "dances" at all it says there's a problem. ...Bob M
