p - here's a few answers: 1 - You can omit the warning light with this setup. Simply run the wire from the #1 alternator terminal direct to on set of N.O. (normally open) ignition switch contacts as shown. 2 - No problem substituting a voltmeter for the ammeter. Connect the "+" terminal on the voltmeter to the same terminal on the switch that feeds the #1 alternator terminal. Connect the "-" voltmeter terminal to a good ground. 3 - That DPDT ignition switch is indeed performing two functions at once: A) The upper N.O. contacts tells the alternator when to "turn on". B) The lower N.C. (normally closed) contact short the magneto to ground when you want to shut down. Now your new DPDT ignition switch should have a total of (6) terminals on it - usually two rows of three terminals (they're the 6 "bubbles" on the diagram of the switch) If yours has only 4 terminals, you don't have the right switch and it's not gonna be able to do what you need it to do.
