It's more than a Grunch... I first picked up the term in the Navy, don't know if that's the connection or if it just happened to be a guy from an area of the country where the term was common. A middlin' large number of something was a "bunch" as in, "I got a BUNCH of work to do." A somewhat larger number was a "group" as in "Man, I caught me a GROUP of bass!" If you were REALLY bragging, you combined the two (bunch and group) which gives you a "Grunch", and when things got completely out of hand, you combined "group" and "bundle" and VIOLA! the word "GRUNDLE" was invented. Now, aren't ya glad ya asked? ":^)
