sounds to me like you have a replacement carb. Mine does not accept the choke lever. A little creativity would allow the rod to be used though. One of the easiest ways to check for a replacement carb is if the air tube from them air cleaner to the carb, if it is metal it is most likely original, if it is all rubber then it is a replacement. not a perfect way of telling, but it will definetely tell if you if the carb is a replacement if you have a complete rubber tube.
