Number 1 is in the front. Remember the firing order is 1,3,4,2. I found out the hard way that on the distributor, the plug wire after 1 goes to cylinder #3 (third from the front), the next one goes to #4 (last one) and plug wire 4 goes the cylinder #2 (second from the front).

Try hooking them up wrong and see what a Farmall running on 1 cylinder sounds like ;>(
