Dave,
Before you spend a lot of time on all these other things, look inside the dist/mag cap for lines that look sorta like a snail's trail. Check it for cracks. Replace it if it's the least bit suspect and replace the wires with solid core (that means wire core) plug wires and replace the center wire too. Some folks use regular car plug wires made from the resistance wire. These will play havoc with your ignition. It's probably the quickest and cheapest thing you can replace. Just be sure to swap the cap and then replace one wire at a time, taking care to get the sequence right. Good luck,
