The upper bearing on the shaft that holds the sector gear and the steering arm is held in place vertical by the bearing sitting in a cage. There is a metal plate that sits over teh bearing that bolts into the casting and holding the bearing in place. On the end of the shaft that holds the bearing is a washer and C clip that prevents the bearing from coming off the shaft. The one thing that is not clear is how much the bearing can move vertical in the cage in the casting. The were no shims that caused the bearing to be placed in a particular vertical position. One thing that I noticed on my sector gear waa that the wear marks from the steering shaft gear were not in the middle of the sector gear teeth. I checked the bushing and bearing on the steering gear shaft and they seem to be fine.
