A few things to remember next time you change the filter. Clean out the groove and make sure the old rubber ring is out of the groove. Wet the new rubber ring with some fresh oil before you place it in the groove. After you place the filter and metal canister back in place and have just started the center bolt, rotate the metal canister a bit to insure it is well placed in the groove. This should help next time, but it sure can make a mess if you don't have it on properly.
