Van: No, I don't think 5199 would be right for total SMD's built. The SMD's were built from about Feb of 1952 to Mar of 1954(includingSMDTA). The Data book has gas and diesel combined totals of 41,000 for 1951 and I'll guess in the cornbelt there were 1/3 diesels and 2/3's gas as diesels were getting morebuyers by the time of the Supers. We had a 1941 MD and few had even seen one back then but when we got the '53 SMD nobody even noticed. The SMD-TA of 1954 was a rare tractor. Maybe only 5199 of those. I grew up on a MD and SMD. I very well remember turning the steering wheel with a front-mounted 4 row cultivator. Just as bad with a loader.(no power steering).Still a very good tractor in its day. I really liked that gas start and a lever to hold the starter in when its very cold..like -20 degrees. ralph
