Do you have a ballast resistor in the wire going to the coil?? The ballast resistor is designed to reduce the voltage to the coil to 6 volts. Normally used when converting from a 6 volt system to a 12 volt. I had a 1967 model 424 and it was 12 volt originally. However it had a generator, not an alternator. I also had a 1976 model 140 and it too had a generator, not an alternator. I expect your 464 was originally 12 v also. Maybe someone replaced the coil with a 6 volt coil and used a ballast resistor.
