When I was 9 yrs old (1953) I was hired by the local farmer who owned the threshing machine. He would pick me up at 6:30 in the morning and we would go to which ever farm we were threshing oats at that day. My job was to get all the belts out of the belly of the machine (where we stored them overnight so they wouldn't get wet) and get them on so the machine could operate properly. I would also carry gas cans to fill his Allis Chalmers WD45 tractor that powered the rig. His was a Belle City 28" machine for any of you old timers out there that might have some experience with one. When we were about ready to start for the day he would back that tractor to tighten the belt and the work began. After I had been with him long enough for him to trust me he even let me line up the tractor and then he would check it. I have some great memories of those days. The first year I worked for him we threshed oats at 32 farms but that was about the time all the farmers were moving to combines and within only a few years he had quit custom threshing. Those were the good ol' days!!!
