I've had good luck like this: Put the gaskets on dry (no paint). Put a little "Never Seize" on each stud (makes the nuts easier to remove the next time...) Install and torque the stud nuts evenly to 10 ft-lb - then go around again and re-tighten them to 20. Finally recheck for 20 ft-lb after the manifold has been warmed up and cooled off once.
