My neighbor put a 8 volt battery in his 8N, he can never get a full charge form the generator, or even a battery charger... Example, a 12 volt battery needs 13.2 - 13.6 volts to recieve a charge, a 6 volt would need 7.0 - 7.4 volts, so even if a 6 volt generator was cranked up to maximum output, it would never reach the 9 volts needed to charge a 8 volt battery, it's fine in the summer, but in the winter, your battery will always be dead. Either convert your whole system to 12 volt, or leave it 6 volt and install a onboard fully automatic battery charger. I use the latter and never have a problem with cranking, even on the coldest days. The one I use is made by Superior Motorcycle Products, Columbus, Ohio. It is switchable for 6 or 12 volts. I picked it up at a local Meijer's. Hope this helps you out.
