Like Red said, Those early H's were real low comp. engines, Guy Fay's book says about 5.95:1 comp. ratio on Gasoline and 4.? on kero & dist. Even the Super H was only 6.1, 300 & 350 weren't much higher. Sounds like You may have a ring problem too. Planing the head is possible, Neighbor had an M that the machine shop made a mistake and planed off 1/8th inch! That M would REALLY Bark! Ran about 3-4 yrs that way and then the IMPOSSIBLE HAPPENED! The cranksahft BROKE right behind the center main bearing. I saw the pieces! Mechanic that had worked on M's for almost 30 yrs had never even heard of breaking a crank in an M before. So Be Careful!
