I dont know if this will work but is worth a shot. First if the craters in the head are not that bad, and if you get 55 psi there is at least half of the normal compression then you could take the head to a reputable machine shop with a surface grinder large enough to handle a M head. And they would have to probably grind off .025" or so (Iam guessing) This would probably cost $250 or more. Then with a new head gasket the compression would go up a little. Or just get another head from another M. You may want to show a picture of the head (a close up of the worst parts) and have a small scale next to the craters to show how deep they are.
