I agree with The Red and Bill. One more possibility however: A hardened exhaust valve seat (if the motor has 'em) worked loose. This will cause cause the valve to burn in short order. I've encounted into this a couple of times - though only on engines with aluminum heads.

For what it's worth, we've got an M and a pair of 6-cyl Olivers, all with cracked and leaking exhaust manifolds. They've accumulated hundreds of hours of work at full load without a hint of valve problems. The slightly reduced exhaust back pressure caused by the leak has no bearing on valve burning - if anything it gives the motor a fraction of a HP more power!
