Farmall differential/tranny noise

I posted this question on my favorite Cub forum but thought I'd try it here as well. I am in the process of a complete rebuild on my 63 Farmall Cub. I am having trouble with gear noise in the rear end. I have replaced the first/reverse sliding gear due to a loud growl in these gears prior to teardown. Now, I have a slight whine in second and a loud whine in third. First and reverse are fine. I had the differential out of the case and adjusted the backlash when I reinstalled. The shop manual calls for 3 to 5 thousandths backlash. I couldn't measure mine but felt confident it was OK as I could detect a very slight amount of play between the bevel pinion and ring gear. Now, when I coast in neutral down a hill, I can actually hear the differential/bevel pinion mating together. Sounds sort of like a "rump, rump, rump" sound. Does it sound like I have too little backlash? Any suggestions are appreciated.
