It might be valves not fully closing, but your timing might be too far advanced also. Loosen the two distributor clamps and rotate the distributor (as you are facing it) about 10 degrees clockwise (that will retard the timing) and see if that helps.

If that doesn't help, I would suspect your valve clearances are way off which is very common on the Hs. I set mine at .018 cold.

Does it backfire at various engine speeds?
