Seems to be a common 560 problem. The one I've been working on had the steel lines rusted through and they blew when I moved the wrong lever one time. I ended up cutting and capping them since the other two remotes were fine for what I needed. Someone at the hardware store had suggested soldering a copper cap on, but I couldn't get it to stick (I've soldered a fair bit of copper over the years with no trouble). Ended up tapping the inside of the steel line and putting a bolt in as a cap. It appears to "do it right" and replace the line involves removing a lot more stuff above where it attaches to the control valves than I was up to at the time. I had asked the list about fixes, and I'm pretty sure a couple of people indicated that there are compression fittings for the steel lines. I don't remember the details - you might try poking around in the archives.
