Thanks for all the help. I tried to polarize the regulator and it still would not charge. Then I looked at the picture of the switch box and found that the cables on my box had been changed around. I did them like the picture, polarized it again, started it up, and the gauage immediately read "charging."
Now one more question. I have a wire on the generator end that is not connected. When standing and looking at the voltage regulator, my cable from the battery attaches to the "battery" terminal of the regulator as it should. Another wire goes down to the coil by the distribtor cap. Then there is third wire that is not connected to anything. Any ideas where this should connect?
I also noticed from the wiring diagram that on my generator the wire hook-up is different. From my "field" terminal on the regulator a wire goes to a connection on the generator at the six o'clock position, just the the left of the regulator. A wire goes from the "generator" terminal of the regulator to a connection at the 12 o'clock on the generator, just above the other one. I noticed that this is different from the wiring diagram someone sent in and wondered if this makes a difference. Thanks again.
