Joe I will bet the generator was rebuilt as original positive ground. Reverse the cables on your battery and see if it will then charge. If you go to negative ground, which you can, then you have to reverse the wires on the ampmeter and repolarize the generator. That positive charge indication you were seeing was actually a negative charge.
