i've had the same problem before and was able to get the gates to align up with neutral with some large screw driver assistance. I determined that the shifter end on mine had worn to the point that it could slide into the neutral area without fully disengaging the gear it was in, usually happened by going from one gear into another diagnally. Iused a torch and welding electrode to enlarge the end of the stick lever and then filed it back down to a size, like original, that just fir freely into the gates.I used the torch because I was welding on cast and was afraid that arc or wire feed might not stick or might get it to hot and destroy what I had. To this day it has been working flawlessly, going on five years.
