The "Row-Crop" tractors were intended to be driven down furrows. If the front wheels were perpendicular to the ground, they'd have to run in an 18+ inch furrow. This would mean less rows per field. Les rows meant less money per crop. It makes the width of the front wheel footprint very close to the rear wheel footprint. The single wheeled narrow front end went a step further in reducing furrow width. Unfortunately, there was a trade-off since the singles require more effort to steer at low speeds.
