The coil is easy to check with a VOM. Disconnect coil wire from points and condensor and measure the resistance from this wire to ground. I am assuming that other end of coil is grounded. You are just trying to verify that the coil has some resistance (not open). Do not get hung up the exact resistance. If it is NOT open the coil is probably OK. Mag coils are made up of many loops of real fine wire. The insulation on the wire tends to deteriate with time causing the wire to break and therefore an open circuit. Sometimes the coil will show a closed circuit when cold and will open up when hot. If the engine is running, chances are the engine will misfire when the coil opens up. I always check the coil first if an engine starts to misfire after it gets hot, but runs good cold. By hot I mean the engine has been running for several minute under load. Remember that the misfiring willget worse as the gap between the broke loops in the coil increase, eventually stalling the engine due to NO SPARK.
