Gene b is right, there are no permanent magnets. It relies on residual magnetism to get generation started. More electrical current, more magnetism and vice-versa. You lost any residual magnetism it may have had by disassembling the generator. Like he said, get a shop manual, put it back together and follow the directions in the manual to flash the field (some call it polarizing). If that doesn't work, check out the cut-out or voltage regulator, whichever you have. If that doesn't work, take them both to a good starter/generator shop and have them go over it. The generator can be rebuilt if it needs it. Cut-outs and regulators are available at most tractor parts suppliers.
