There is a reason for burning. Out here in Idaho timber country, the state keeps back 5% of the sold timber to make sure the land owner complys to the cleanup laws. If your slash isn't stacked and burned, you or your logger doesn't get the money back. Slash piles harbor many insects that are threat to healthy timber. Right now we are having alot of the Doug fir stands sprayed by helicopter for the gypsey moth. The moth also infects the grand fir. That is why they burn. In a semi-arid area, it would take decades for slash piles to rot. We burn in the fall after the rains come again, (or snow) not during the middle of a drought. Just leaving the slash lay on the ground is a real fire danger, and putting every thing thru a chipper is cost prohibitive, because of the labor involved. It takes more than just leaving stuff alone to achieve a healthy forest stand, unlike the propaganda you hear from the enviromentalists who want to stop all logging.
