Sounds like something's wrong in the wiring. The ammeter showing -9 or -10 when you turn on the switch (with motor stopped) is way too high. Should only show -3 or -4. That says there's other electrical load besides the coil drawing off the coil side of the ignition switch. Suggest opening the ammeter box and check the wiring inside. Look for a load connected to the coil (switched) side of the ign switch - should only be the ign coil wire connnected here. Also check carefully the generator field resistor and headlight dimmer resistor on the light switch - make sure no wiring is touching either resistor (can burn thru the insulation and cause unpredictable problems). Post back what you find...
