I want to thank everyone who participates in this discussion board. As I was restoring my tractor I would always take the time to search the archives to learn what and how others had handled my next restoration task. I know I saved many hours not making mistakes or using the tips offered. Now I would like to partially repay my debt. After reassembling my A, everything worked except it would only charge if I grounded the field coils. I was careful to clean the paint off the mating surfaces of all the parts requiring a ground, including the generator and regulator. However, I neglected to think about the connection between the light switch box and its connection to the steering post. Last night, I tried running a ground wire from the battery to the mounting bolt of the light switch box and the charging system worked normally. I then carefully cleaned a small around the hole in the steering post for mounting the Light switch box, and I used a new flat and lock washer. Now the charging system works normally 2-5 amps on the low setting and 10 amps on high setting. The lesson learned here is, if you paint clean the mating surfaces for all the part that require a ground. The lights, generator, starter and ignition system all require a good ground. Don’t overlook the switch box. I hope this tip helps someone about to paint. Dave Ulm
