For negative ground with the amp gauge facing down, stick the wire from the battery, via probably the hot side of the starter post, on the left post. The wire from the VR bat terminal, the coil wire and the light switch wire go on the right post.

Are you using an old wiring harness from the light switch box back to the regulator? Does the coil wire run through this harness also, or is it independent on your machine?
