Michael: Sounds just like my Wisconsin engine experience! My uncle Ray had a baler with a Wisconsin engine, also a crank start, when I was a kid. He'd be in the middle of a baling job when, without fail, the thing would quit. Then I had the "pleasure" of watching him sweat trying to start that engine in the hot sun, or with rain threatening, with that short hand crank. I don't think I ever felt sorrier for anyone. The engine NEVER started right away. Sometimes it would start eventually, sometimes not. The times the old Wisconsin started were real vocabulary lessons as you described. When it wouldn't start it usually collected a few more sheet metal dents from a severe beating with its own crank. Uncle Ray put an end to that nonsense by buying a PTO-driven baler about 1970. That's probably the best investment he ever made. The phrase "Wisconsin engine" still makes me cringe! Mark W.
