Hello - I replaced the transmission drive shaft and countershaft oil seals recently on my Farmall M. Received lots of good suggestions from this board. I'm assuming the H will be similar. Disassembly proved my biggest challenge. Had to remove the Lift-All hydraulic reservoir to access the bearing retainers that the oil seals are pressed into. Then the clutch to get sufficient clearance to remove the transmission drive shaft coupling (this may be different on the H due to the long torque tube). The countershaft nut didn't want to budge - no amount of banging on a brass rod in the keyway was going to help. I finally got it out by bolting a 1/4" x 1" x 3' piece of steel to the drive shaft coupling and using that for leverage to prevent the transmission turning. I was then able to use a piece of 1/2" x 1/2" key stock to unscrew the countershaft nut. I recommend using Speedi-Sleeves on the couplings where the oil seals ride. You probably have grooves worn in the old surfaces. Although expensive, the sleeves will ensure that the new seals don't leak.

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
