Mine did that the other day. Turned out to be vacuum in the gas tank. Loosening the gas cap fixed it (then later drilling a small hole on top of each cap). Since it ran with the choke, it is lack of gas that is your problem. Probably not the float, but could be. If you can reproduce the problem, first unscrew the gas caps and see if you hear a vacuum release, then start further diagnosis at the carb: try unscrewing the float drain valve and see if there is gas. If there is none (probable), then unscrew the intake line to the fuel pump and see if gas is making it that far. The answers will tell you what to fix.
