Thanks for the comments guys. Acutally this is not the drain plug for the bowl but provides access to the main jet I think. Not a pipe plug but a straight thread plug with a fibre washer for a seal. There was a little bit of thread left so I tried wrapping with Teflon tape and so far it is holding. Worries me though that it might start to leak unnoticed. The exhaust pipe drops down just behind the carb and I'm afraid if it starts to leak while running it might catch fire. Guess I'll need to keep and eye on it and put this on the list of things to fix when things slow down.
