If you look in the archives, you will see that we cover this every few months or so. As used in tractors neither system is inherently superior to the other. Either way will make your tractor work just fine. Until the mid '50's just about everything, (cars, trucks, tractors) was 6 volt positive ground. With bigger, higher compression engines, 6 volt systems had trouble delivering enough power for cranking so 12 volts became the norm since they could do the same work at half the amperage. Negative ground also became the standard at about the same time. Today the principle advantage to negative ground is that almost all equipment and accessory devices use it and a positive ground vehicle would be at a big disadvantage in the marketplace. Even with that, there are some positive ground vehicles around. Every now and then somebody will claim that one way is better. Since everything electrical can be predicted by a law of physics and proved by a mathematical formula (ie. Ohms law, Watts law, Kirchofs law etc,) I usually ask them to show me the math behind the claim. Nobody has yet. So, either way will work, negative ground is most commonly used today.
