I mow with an M on a 479 haybine and bale with an M on a 348 JD. My old IH 340 is a good baler but I can't get it to tie. We rake with a C or an H using an IH 16 five bar rake. It is great using the old equipment. I think they are efficient. My hired hand came from an all JD round bale operation. His greatest problem was understanding that the foot clutch controlled the PTO. He is now acclimated and tells me we make hay a lot cheaper than his folks. We've baled about 5800 square bales so far this summer. My dad taught me to push the gearshift from 3rd to 2nd when baling without using the clutch. It is almost as good as live power. Take it easy and is just slips right in to 2nd with no clashing, right between strokes of the baler. I have an M with an M&W live PTO hand clutch but keep it on the brush hog because it is more valuable to me there.
