This is true. I usually do it like john d pointed out in a previous thread though by releasing the PTO lever as soon as I hit the clutch, then I can still shift gears and move around instead of having to wait for the mower to stop before being able to put it back in gear again. But now that I think about it, if it's easier to take it out of gear, you could probably do that first, stop the tractor, then disengage the PTO lever so you could change gears without the tranny grinding. Anyway, the point Skip, John and I are making is that you have to have the PTO stoped (or disengaged if it's still turning) to shift gears if you elect to go without the overiding clutch. Stan
