Muffler or straight pipe, which?

I recently got a straight pipe for my F20, which
had a muffler. It certainly sounds impressive, but
then I got to thinking, would I run the risk of
burning valves with no exhaust restriction. Also,
could you avoid burning valves by readjusting the
carb, or just run it with the straight stack and
don't worry about it. Any advice would be appreciated.
