I got a 1940 H with the trans removed, except for the reverse idler gear and the differential; they were in. All I had to do to put in the lower shaft, or the countershaft, was push the forward (or hydraulic shaft end) in first, then the other end fit okay. Here are two things that need to be done to remove the lower shaft: 1. remove the sliding gears and shaft as a unit and 2. there's a coupling for the hydraulic shaft that screws onto the counter shaft (and it sits in the oil seal); this needs to come off. If you do these things and shove the countershaft forward, it should come out as a unit. The reverse gear didn't need to come out. Don't forget to remove the HEAVY hydraulic pump.
