To check butterfly valves you have to remove the entire carb manifold assebly, only a few nuts. But before you do that check the oil in the air filter. Too much thick stuff will choke it, I suggest dump it, clean with gas, refill with new to correct level and with correct 30w oil. On diesel the butterfly valves are open. There is another port for air gas mix, much smaller. If the butterfly valves weren't closeing properly it would run like crap in gas mode. You might want to check under rocker cover to make sure valve clearances are set right all the valves gas,ex,in.
