Add Sta-bil to the gas per the instructions, especially if the tractor sits over the winter.
You can get it at most auto parts stores. This is good stuff, it will even keep the gas/oil mix in two stroke engines from gumming up the carb over the winter.
It's always a good idea to run the carb dry as well. On some carbs, you can just open the drain cock and empty it that way.
