Farmall BN PTO loose

Hello- I use my Farmall BN every so often to cut the fields (I have another Ford tractor that usually does that), and yesterday things were fine, and today things were fine as well until I noticed it wasn't cutting! The PTO wasn't moving, and the tractor wasn't under any load...if I went into an already cut area, it would start to turn, and operate normally, but as soon as there as any load on it, it stops. When I got back to the house, I took the belt/pto gearbox filler plug out, and stuck a clean piece of wood "in the jaws" of the differential gears (I don't know if that makes sense or not...I don't do much tractor work, only in my spare time. What I'm referring to is the gear connected to the PTO, and the other to the smaller belt PTO, and when you have everything disengaged, you can spin the belt PTO, and the main PTO will spin and vice vesa.). As far as I know, the PTO shaft should not turn at all if that gear is stationary, but if I try to turn the PTO a little bit harder while the gear is being held, the shaft turns. As far as I can tell, it seems that the problem occurs as soon as the shaft goes in -- before it reaches any clutching mechanisms. Does anyone have any ideas why the PTO shaft is loose like that? Thanks. TM
