Had the exact same problem with my Cub last week.
The fuel line to the carb was just trickling down. Check your fuel valve(at the sediment bowl)make sure it is open (someone else here mentioned that)
I found an obstruction and some gum in the orifice leading from the fuel tank to the sediment bowl. Cleaned it all out and had good fuel flow to the carb. (Someone also mentioned this as well)
Also make sure your float in the fuel resevoir in the carb is adjusted correctly. If it is misadjusted, you will have the fuel resevoir not filling up all the way, and after the engine uses up the fuel that is already in the resevoir, it will not be able to keep up with the demand of the engine (sputters)
I had both these problems(at different times) and was able to fix them without much problem.
